In search of the wollen thread

This tour is designed to stir up your emotions simply by showing you what can be achieved with threads of wool.

In Abruzzo’s Gran Sasso parkland area a young family breeds sheep for the soft wool which they yield in abundance and which is then turned into kilometers of milk-white woollen thread.

This thread, collected together in skeins, then takes on colour in a very special way: by being treated with certain leaves and roots and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo wine.

We will visit a workshop where Valeria, a young and highly creative woman from Abruzzo, an innovator who has rediscovered a truly ancient art, will show us the workings of a laboratory devoted to natural wool colouring and how to work the threads with our own fingers.

We will hear many stories from her as we go about our work, stories that will both surprise us and warm our hearts.

Full day (7/8 hours maximum)

The ancient Roman settlement of Sextantium, village of gentlemen and shepherds …

Arrive at Santo Stefano di Sessanio, one of the most charming villages in the Gran Sasso Park (Parco del Gran Sasso) and in former times a wealthy place owing to its revenue from sheep farming activity. So much so that in the 16th century the Medici family of Florence took over and in so doing brought artistic and cultural influences to the place. Later on it became a ghost village until the second half of the 20th century, when it was restored to life by a young entrepreneur who had the brilliant idea of transforming it into a single large hotel space for people to come and stay.

In the workshop of Valeria we all make a small object which we will be able to take home with us to keep us warm during cold winter nights.

Not least among these was the English poet and writer Edward Lear. These lands have also often inspired movie directors for their films as well as world famous photographers.

16.30

We visit Capestrano, the place in which the famous statue of the Guerriero, (the Warrior) was found, subsequently to become one of the symbols of the Abruzzo region, It is now kept in the National Archeological Museum in Chieti.
